Dr. Keith Stav and his wife Sharleen, both Helena natives, bought Bridger Veterinary Hospital over 20 years ago. Dr. Stav grew up around a variety of animals in Helena and worked for Bridger in high school. He completed his undergraduate degree in biology at Montana State University. He received his doctor of veterinary medicine at Colorado State University.
The AAEP Research Award was given to CSU equine surgeon and researcher Dr. C. Wayne McIlwraith for his contributions to equine research, specifically in the areas of orthopedics, joint disease, and biologic therapies. Equine veterinarian Dr. Richard ‘Chip’ Estes (Colorado State ’74) was recognized with the Distinguished Educator–Mentor Award.

Chance struggled in his early recovery with Webber. His severe colic and ulcers required constant veterinary attention. As he improved, Webber, who is now a biomedical sciences student at Colorado State University, was obsessed with finding out where her horse came from.
Dr. Robert Callan, Colorado State University, says the best situation is colostrum from the calf’s own mother, if possible. If not, fresh or frozen colostrum from another cow is next best. Choose a mature cow that has had several calves; she’ll have higher quality colostrum than a first-calf heifer.

Colorado’s Fox Hollow Animal Hospital is a family affair and, thanks to a sweet moment that went viral two years ago, it will have some time in the spotlight soon. The Lakewood veterinary clinic — run by patriarch Dr. Tony Henderson and staffed with his two veterinarian sons, CSU Biomedical Sciences graduates Ross and Ryan — will be the center of Animal Planet’s new show, “Hanging With the Hendersons.”
Diagnostics—liver, pancreatic, kidney, and intestinal biopsies—are another big application, according David Twedt, DVM, DACVIM, a professor of clinical sciences at Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Even laparoscopic-assisted surgical procedures, such as intestinal foreign body removal, are gaining traction, he added.
“I think these results add support to the idea that many veterinarians are looking favorably at cannabinoids as an alternative treatment for several things including pain, seizures and anxiety,” says Dr. Lori Kogan, one of the authors of the survey report.
The deadliest tick-borne disease has Colorado roots. Powassan virus—which is fatal in 10 percent of cases and leaves half of its victims with brain damage—hasn’t been detected in a Coloradan. But scientists first isolated it from a tick found along the Cache la Poudre River in 1952, six years before the first known human case (in Ontario), says Powassan expert Dr. Gregory Ebel of Colorado State University.
