Samantha Keeney, an 8th-grade student from Boulder, Colorado, embarked on a remarkable scientific journey driven by her passion for horse riding. Her curiosity led her to investigate the effects of exercise stress on equine physiology, ultimately collaborating with Colorado State University's esteemed faculty in the Department of Clinical Sciences. Together, they delved into the intricate interplay between cortisol levels and cytokine elevation in horses subjected to moderate exercise. Their findings, including the correlation of cortisol with key cytokines like G-CSF and eotaxin, shed new light on equine health and welfare during athletic performance, potentially paving the way for enhanced strategies to optimize horse well-being.

Dr. Stephen "Steve" Reynolds, professor in the Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, passed away on January 31, 2024. Reynolds was a national leader in Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Health focused on agricultural workers.
