Meritorious Service Award goes to Cox

The AVMA presented the AVMA Meritorious Service Award in August to Dr. Mark Cox, a practitioner who has been involved in organized veterinary medicine throughout his career.

Dr. Cox (Colorado State '72) started out working at Zarges Animal Clinic in El Paso, Texas. He briefly owned Sierra Animal Clinic in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. In 1976, he founded Del Norte Veterinary Service in Canutillo, Texas, and in 1991, El Abrigado Animal Clinic in El Paso, which he currently operates.

Dr. Cox served as president of the Southern New Mexico Veterinary Association in 1975 and president of the El Paso VMA in 1992. With the Texas VMA, he served on the board of directors from 1996-2002. Among other activities, he developed a lifetime membership program as well as initiated and chaired the TVMA Business Alliance Committee. He chaired the board in 2003 and 2005 and the TVMA Legislative Committee in 2006. He also served as 2007-08 TVMA president.

With the AVMA House of Delegates, he was the alternate delegate for Texas from 2009-12 and the Texas delegate from 2012-17. He was a member of the House Advisory Committee from 2013-16. He also was a member of the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference Planning Committee from 2013-16.
