Colorado State University will host “Information, Misinformation and Disinformation: Colorado State experts sort it out” symposium at 4 p.m. March 1, at the Morgan Library Event Hall on Colorado State University Campus, 1201 Central Drive, Fort Collins.

A panel composed of the CSU faculty will explore the definition of facts, how the concept of facts affects our daily lives and concepts of “fake news,” “alternative” facts, beliefs and opinions.

“It seems there is a rising series of concerns with what’s truth, what’s fact, and what’s fiction,” said Patrick Burns, dean of libraries at Colorado State University and one of the organizers of the event. “It seems really relevant in this time.”

The participating CSU faculty will be Tim Amidon, assistant professor in the Department of English; Benjamin Clegg, professor in the Department of Psychology; Karen Dobos, associate professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Pathology; and Rob Sica, social sciences and humanities liaison librarian at Morgan Library.

“We wanted (multiple) viewpoints,” Burns said.

Topics that will be explored include fact versus belief, how opinions are formed, how to separate fact from fiction, how the First Amendment influences current trends, and what employees of the university can do in the future to address these topics.

“This is kind of putting our toe in the water,” Burns said.

If there is positive response to the symposium, there will be more.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, go to source.colostate.edu/#events
