A new study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution offers rare insight into the pathway of a common virus in two geographic areas with different wildlife management strategies. The research has implications for the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, which potentially emerged following wildlife-to-human transmission.
Jennifer L. Peel, head of epidemiology at Colorado State University’s Department of Environmental and Radiological Health Sciences, said studying areas that are not well monitored presented a challenge because it could be difficult to validate levels of exposure to pollution.
“The anti-vaccination movement was a cause for concern before Covid,” said Lori Kogan, one of the study’s authors and a professor at Colorado State University who studies human-animal interactions. “It’s certainly a cause for concern now.” Kogan is also conducting a follow-up study exploring pet vaccine hesitancy in the wake of Covid-19, with data due within the next few months.
