Ask the experts: Jessica Rubin, J.D., professor of animal law at the University of Connecticut School of Law, and Jane Shaw, D.V.M. and Ph.D., professor of veterinary medicine at the CSU College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. They were college roommates three decades ago and have had parallel careers serving animals in animal law and veterinary medicine, respectively.

Wildlife officer Brock McArdle took the 65-pound dog to a specialist at Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital for further evaluation. Dr. Bruna Del Nero conducted an ultrasound and other tests that led to diagnosing Cash with an enlarged heart caused by dilated cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart’s muscles to weaken and can be fatal if left untreated.
“We are incredibly grateful for the dedicated veterinary specialists at CSU who helped us navigate Cash’s health issues,” said CPW Wildlife Officer and Cash’s handler Brock McArdle. “Cash plays a critical role in our wildlife field operations and it's our priority to give him a long, happy and healthy life.”

The first study, funded by Colorado State University and published in the Equine Veterinary Journal in March, used digital radiographs to examine three different grades of lucencies in the stifles in yearlings and 2-year-olds. Led by Dr. Jeffrey Berk, the seminar included researchers Dr. Wayne McIlwraith and Dr. Christopher Kawcak.
Morris Animal Foundation recently created a veterinary research fellowship, the Dr Rodney Page Fellowship in Canine Oncology, in honor of Rodney Page, DVM, MS, a well-known veterinary oncologist and original principal investigator of the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study.
Dr. Douglas Thamm, Professor of Oncology at Colorado State University, has won the Alan Kelly International Award category of the 2023 International Canine Health Awards, in recognition of his work improving the standard of care for canine patients suffering from cancer and applying many of his findings to benefit human patients.
University of California-Davis (average rating of 4.5) was ranked first, Cornell University in Ithaca, New York was third, Ohio State ranked fourth and North Carolina State and the University of Pennsylvania tied for fifth.
