Our students are being recognized for the amazing work they are doing. Below are some of the honors/awards that our students have received most recently.

CSU’s Veterinarians as One Inclusive Community for Empowerment (VOICE) hosted an incredible national conference at CSU Spur on a surprisingly snowy day in April. Their theme was Access to Care and we heard from incredible speakers, including Dr. Jodi Boyd, Dr. Noa Román-Muñiz, Dr. Kyle Granger, Dr. Raye Taylor, Kathleen WoodenKnife, Katrina Schmitz, and our Vice President for Inclusive Excellence Kauline Cipriani, Ph.D. The program was led by VOICE President Summer Lara, Vice President Mercer Butts, and Treasurer Cyan Abron.

Beyond this amazing student-led program, two other of our D.V.M. students won DEI-related leadership scholarships:

Third-year student Johnny Altwal was selected as a 2024 Merck Scholar. Johnny has served as a DEI representative here at CSU, and is president of CSU’s D.V.M. student pride chapter and president of the Student Association of Veterinary Surgeons chapter at CSU. Johnny is a fierce advocate for DEI and his colleagues both in his formal and informal roles.

Natalia Sanchez, also a third-year D.V.M. student, was selected as a 2024 Chewy Scholar. Natalia has also served as a DEI rep, held multiple leadership roles in her class, and has worked extensively to support DEI research and work at CSU. Natalia is steadfast in supporting her colleagues and advocating for our continued work towards our commitment to DEI in the college.

Our D.V.M. students are incredible, but so are our undergraduate students. At our recent MURALS (Multicultural Undergraduate Research, Art, and Leadership Symposium) event, Nizhoni Hatch, a senior in the Department of Biomedical Sciences won an Inclusive Excellence – Social Justice Enhancer award for her presentation on “Actualizing a Solution to the Navajo Nation’s Water Contamination.” Neuroscience sophomore Archer Casper and team received two awards: Rising Star and Rams’ Choice for their research on “Being Trans in Public: A CSU Case Study.”

We are so excited to celebrate our students and so thankful for their leadership and advocacy in our college, CSU, and the world!
