Colorado State University’s Veterinary Continuing Education (CSUVetCE) program at the Translational Medicine Institute (TMI) began their 2024 course season right away in January. Almost the entire month has been dedicated to hosting private courses for Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG), one of the program’s largest partnerships.

The CSUVetCE team supports labs for 24-36 veterinarians almost every day throughout the month of January for courses focused on zoological companion animals, Critical Care Unit (CCU) and emergency procedures, RECOVER, abdominal ultrasound basics, emergency surgery, and endoscopy.

Altogether, the program has 105 courses scheduled for 2024, with public courses representing nearly half. These courses are primarily designed for general practitioners, but CSUVetCE also has several options designed specifically for residents and diplomates.

“What we are proud of is our impact on veterinary medicine,” said Geri Baker, Senior Manager of Continuing Education at the TMI. “We know this extends beyond the classroom. We train veterinarians who work in shelters, zoos, clinics, industry—and those individuals will improve and save the lives of hundreds of animals in their career. That’s what’s important here.”

Preparing for this year’s courses has been happening for several months, and even before we all celebrated the new year, CSUVetCE had filled sixty percent of their 2024 public courses through May.

“Though it is a regular occurrence, it’s always exciting to see a course sell out,” says Sarah Nesbella, Communications and Outreach Coordinator for the TMI. “But what I love seeing is where folks are coming from. Veterinarians travel from all over the world to take a CE course at the TMI. It’s exciting to see how popular CSUVetCE is becoming, especially being such a young program.”

New courses on the books

While the program has included fan favorites like Small Animal Abdominal Surgery, Small Animal Dentistry, and their Minimally Invasive Surgery weeks, 2024 also brings new CSUVetCE courses never held before at the TMI. These include:

  • Stifle Stabilization: TightRope Technique
  • Wound Management and Skin Reconstruction
  • Practical Surgical Techniques of the Head & Neck
  • Practical Lateral Fabellar Suture & Patellar Luxation
  • Several courses focused on cardiology
  • The 2nd Annual Peer-to-Peer Summit, this year focused on complex fractures of the distal humerus and elbow.

CSUVetCE has been an educational partner with the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) since 2020. With sponsors and industry partners increasing each year, the program continues bringing new business to Colorado State University, a critical component for the program’s success in competing with larger, commercial veterinary continuing education programs. This year, CSUVetCE acquired an annual sponsorship with Elanco for pain management that will support sixteen of CSUVetCE’s public courses in 2024.

“Our purpose is all about positive societal impact,” explained Dr. Ross Palmer, Associate Director of Education at the TMI. “We seek to improve the world by inspiring and equipping veterinary teams to better care for their patients such that lives are lived to their fullest.”

“That doesn’t happen by chance. We have a great team of people who see what we do through the lens of others, and that allows us to harness the power of the collision between inspired learners, engaged educators, and meaningful experiences. We’re fortunate because our purpose, mission, and vision resonate with a lot of people, and we’re always eager to partner with similarly missioned groups. Those partnerships extend our reach and amplify our impact.”
