College undergraduates honored at research and creativity showcase

Twelve students from Biomedical Sciences, Microbiology and Neuroscience participated in the Multicultural Undergraduate Research Art and Leadership Symposium.
Colorado State University specialists Retta Bruegger, Jenny Beiermann and Ragan Adams taught sessions on how to prepare for a drought, how to care for animals during an emergency, and other topics.

Dr. Geoff Heffner and Melanie Joy of the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at CU Anschutz, were awarded a CCTSI pilot grant for promising CSU investigators and CU-CSU collaborations for "Medical Device for Kidney Disease Indication: from Canines to Humans."
The work is being led by Colorado State University’s Orthopaedic Research Center veterinarians, Drs Wayne McIlwraith, Frances Peat, and Chris Kawcak; and Dr Jeff Berk, from Lexington.
“The people affected by the disease are the most neglected, living in areas far away from health centres,” Dr. Francisco Olea-Popelka says. “They are the very same people in charge of producing the food for the rest of us.”
The calf, a 10-month-old named IVF 1, is also the first in the world to be conceived using eggs and sperm collected from Yellowstone bison, one of the last genetically pure herds in the country.
Eight bison -- four calves and their mothers -- were released in mid-March on public lands in northern Colorado. A 10-month-old calf known as IVF 1 was among the newcomers.
